Jay 07/16/16 - Pose 01, 9"x 12", Watercolor on Paper

Heading from New York to Honolulu, I wanted to do more watercolor work. I was in a watercolor fit, working with my two favorite complementary color mixes -- purple and yellow. The dioxazine purple's exceptional depth creates pretty shadows and darkens the Naples opaque yellow in a nice way.

I was trying to make the contours work, making a strong silouhette. I made pools on the page which gives the edges a strong quality where the pigment collects. I was trying to use it carefully where it explains the form and lightens in the center.

LCC Sun Drawing 6-22-14 Elaine – Long Poses

Elaine 6-22-14 Pose 1, Acrylic on Cardboard, 10”x 13.5”  

I was on a roll, after I completed the short poses Sunday Morning at Leeward Community College. I really love how I did the last short pose.

I then did four drawings I really like. I went immediately home and finished them all. I had a great morning.

Above is the first drawing of the morning. Elaine likes to stand so her face is just out of the spotlight, it makes the light rakes across her face.  There were beautiful bright highlights on her nose and cheek and dramatic shadows on her face.

I was really interested in capturing the play between the dark/dark nuanced contrast of her head and the dark background and the really dramatic highlights of nose, cheek and torso. The effect is working well.  It draws focus to the center of the page and keeps the eye there.

I like how I rendered the extended foot although I’m a little unhappy with the hand.

I may have over worked this one. 

When I paint I enjoy breaking forms into flat painted shapes. The nuance and definition comes from the brush work. I really like the fields of color in this painting. I am not bothered by the flatness and I like the design quality of this painting. However, I may have smoothed some areas a bit too much, losing the brush work.

There is a stillness to this painting that I do enjoy.

Pose 3 was a lot of fun, the foreshortening was a real challenge. I, in general, think it was really successful.

I love how I rendered her feet in this picture. They really stand out for me as well done.

This is a very complete painting. I like the space I was able to create in this painting. I may use some color variation in sheet to define the space a little better.

The mass and form of the painting are very solid. Her body has the illusion of real weight to it. I am really getting comfortable working with the Purple and Yellow.

My color palette on all of these this is NaplesYellow Hue, Dioxazine purple, Titanium White and Mars Black.

This life drawing class occurs on Sundays at 10:30 AM. It is located at Leeward Community College in the Drawing and Painting room. There is a $10 class fee.

LCC Sun Drawing 3/30/14 - Sergio - Long Poses

I had a really good Morning at LCC on the 30th. Sergio was the model and I am very happy with this set of drawings.

I have been doing Tombow drawings at the Sunday session and oil pastels during the Monday sessions.

It was hard to pick a favorite of the morning, but this first one I really like. Sergio took this pose, to which everyone's reaction was, "Are you sure you can hold this for 20 minutes?" He said, "I'm all locked in here, I'm thinking of writing a book on this."

The pose is beautiful and I like the drawing that resulted.

I will have to spend a little more time on this drawing, but there is a lot of potential here. When I complete it expect another update on the blog.

Sergio 03/30/14 -Pose 02,  Watercolor and Ink on Paper, 9"x12"

This was the second pose of the night. He took a reclining pose because the last pose was rather difficult. This drawing is basically completed in my mind. There is a great spontaneity and I like the contrast between the defined legs and the less defined torso. I also like how the legs look.

This was the third pose of the morning.

As I was drawing this I started to realize how difficult the chair was to render. There is an elegant natural curve to the armrests and the bottom of the chair is falling through in places.  After i was done with it I asked Mike, "Do your students hate this chair?"

Before he could reply, one of his students in the session chimed in, "The chair is the devil."

I guess that answered that question.

I spent the break drawing the chair in more detail. I am very happy with how this came out.

What... a 4th pose?

Normally these session only have three long poses, but there was enough time to squeeze in a 4th. It is another drawing that needs a few hours of work afterwards. We will see what I can come up with.

LCC Sun Drawing 03/30/14 - Sergio - Short Poses

I have been making a habit of going to Sunday Drawing over at Leeward Community College. The model was Sergio and as always he was a blast to draw.  These are the short poses from that morning.

Of the short poses, this was my favorite of the morning.  It was one of the five-minute poses and Sergio carefully balanced on the staff. I am happy this pose came out nice. The washes in this drawing show the range of tone I am able to get with the Tombow Pens. I think there is a nice rhythm to this drawing.

This was the 10-minute drawing. In these, I have been starting to get the blue into the darks of the drawing. It actually reveals a lot of my technique with these pens. I will usually do most of the sketching in a single pen and then work other colors into the drawing as I need to define more and more.

On a side note, if I ever need to do a drawing of someone kneeling with a crusader sword, I can use this sketch as a base for that.

This one is my favorite of the gestures. I think the ink wash and the hatch marks are working well together.

I went out to the Figure Drawing class at LCC this past Sunday. It has been a while since I was there, and I did have a good morning.

These are the longer poses and I was a little mixed about how I felt about them. Above is my favorite of the morning. It was over a drawing of Sergio from another session.

I really am torn over this drawing. I do not like it. However everyone I talk to loves it, so maybe others see what I do not see here. It is incomplete so perhaps after some additional work it could be a strong drawing. I will have to put more time into it.

I really dislike reclining poses from the side. Generally, I think they are uninteresting, so after I completed this drawing I was a little unhappy with it. However, it's really growing on me. I do like how this drawing came out. I really like the way I rendered the face, even though it doesn't look that much like Carli.

So it's been a while since I went to the LCC drawing class. School had started, so there were a few other people at the class.

The model was Carli; I have not drawn her since the event Kandi held. 

Above is my favorite of these. It is the 10-minute drawing. I am really getting the hang of these drawings. There is a neat mood to this sketch. I am really liking the effect of the multiple color pens.

LCC SUN Life Drawing - 04/14/13 - Elaine

So this is the second week I have gone to the drawing class at Leeward Community College. I am enjoying it a lot. It is not all that crowded and the lighting is awesome.

Today the model was Elaine, the same model from Zwick studio's on Saturday.

I had a pretty good morning. My favorite of the morning was this one. There is a really nice feel to the drawing.

I am really enjoying the lighting at this class it is making for some really dramatic poses.

When Elaine took the pose, I was struck with how pretty it was. I was ready to do a drawing over another pose, but instead grabbed a fresh piece of paper and began to draw on it. 

There is not much to this pose or drawing, but it works. I sometimes am caught up in trying to add more and more to a page but this is a good example of simple being elegant. Its just more to contemplate and think over.

The blue is really setting off the Burnt Sienna nicely. 

Mark, the professor who is running the class and teaches at LCC, spent a good amount of time changing a burnt out light, then apologizing for the light not being strong enough. I was so impressed with the lighting there regardless. Mark has a theater background and it shows in the lighting.

I like how this page come out. I like how the figures are interacting with one another. I also really like how I rendered the central face. I applied the oil pastel in a very painterly way. I really love the entire left side of the page.
 

This was the second pose of the morning. I am a little unhappy with this sketch. I will probably take some turpentine to it and try again tomorrow.

The last pose was only 15 minutes, so I decided to do a portrait. I am on the fence about this one. It looks good for 15 minutes but still is not all that great.

The  Leeward Community College Sun Life drawing class is located at the campus Art Room. The class begins at 10:30 and will run until 1:30. There is a $10 class fee.
