Woman at Starbucks

I had some time on Thursday, so I went and hung out at Starbucks, a very nice place to draw.

The sun was starting to set and the shadows were kind of intense. So this painting came out kind of neat. I do like how this came out.

At the HIFF

I am waiting between movies and decided to work on some watercolors of people at the Honolulu International Film Festival, HIFF 2012. There is a sitting area I have gone to during the breaks between the movies. I have been doing some pictures of the patrons.

Above is my favorite so far. I like how everything is in shadow, but the painting is still rather bright. It really is a strength of watercolor. I also love the shadow behind him.

I had to draw the woman above because she was wearing a really baggy sweater vest over a really baggy sweater and she just looked so tiny in all those clothes. I like how I rendered the sweater. It's also a profile, and I rock profiles.

So far, movie-wise, the most fun I had at a movie was Fresh Meat, a horror comedy, with Jango and Bobba Fett himself, Temuera Morrison. Morrison plays a father with a cannibalistic secret...

Italy Sketchbook 6: Galleria Borghese

So this part of the trip was to the Galleria Borghese. This was actually a rather weird experience. You had to make reservation before hand to visit this gallery. They only allowed a certain number of people in for the 1 hour block. Both of these drawings were done in that time frame.

Above is Bernini's David. I remember this drawing being better then it looks now. I must have lost some crispness in the sketchbook.

This is Bernini's Apollo and Daphne which is an incredible statue. I took a rather unusual view of the statue and I like the page layout. In the foreground is most of Daphne's torso and in the background is Apollo's face.

HMoA Drawing Class 10-15-12 - Sergio

Another Monday Figure Drawing class. I will start including at least the first name of the models on here. I have been doing this class for almost 4 months and i have seen their rotation of models so I can include them.

It is surprising to me I think the most successful one was the one  the one above. That is the 10 minute sketch with 2 two minute sketches under it. I tried to focus on the torso and see how much definition i could get in 10 minutes. I am happy with that sketch especially the tension I was able to capture in it. Sergio was grasping a pole with his two arms: one raised above him and one below. There was an interesting muscle strain in the pose.

I had to go to a movie at the Honolulu International Film Festival, HIFF, so I didn't stay for the entire class.

This is a 20 minute drawing with 2 gestures under it. I wish the pose was lit better, but I like how is came out.

Above is 4 gestures with the 2 five minute poses on top.

This life drawing class is on Monday at 7PM. It is located at the The Honolulu Museum of Art School, formerly the Academy Art Center at Linekona. There is a 10 dollar class fee.

Student on his iPad

This is a watercolor of another of my students. Not a happy picture, but I do like how some of the things are rendered. I like how the items on the table look. There is also some water star-bursting in the background.

With no effort on your part you were born to be
something very special and set apart.
What you are going to do in appreciation
of that gift is a decision only you can make.”

Ashlyn @ the HIFF

So the Honolulu International Film Festival, HIFF, is in town and my friends and I are watching movies voraciously this week. There are blocks of time between the movies, so it is a perfect opportunity for me to draw and paint.

Above is a portrait that I did of Ashlyn while we were waiting for a movie... She looks a little surprised in the picture.

So far it's Monday, and we have seen nine movies at the festival. There are two highlights so far.

Dead Sushi is the Japan extreme movie at the festival. If you're not familiar, they are a blast-- in the Toxic Avenger or Godzilla vein. It left me laughing at how amazingly awful, over the top it is. This one lives up to form featuring schools of CGI zombie sushi attacking people like piranhas. It even features a cute Tomago sushi singing like Gizmo from the Gremlins

Caesar Must Die is an Italian movie that is part documentary, part Shakespearean play. It's about a group of prisoners who put on a production of Julius Caesar. There is a passion and a magic to the film that is captivating.

The festival goes on till Sunday. I hope to keep drawing and painting. Let's hope for some good art and some great film.

Italy Sketchbook 5: St Catherine - Roma

So this was one of my favorite drawings in this sketchbook. When I went to Rome I fell in love with this sculpture. This sculpture is of St Catherine.

It is located Piazza Pia a public park in Rome just outside the Vatican and Castle San'Angelo.

I love the hand and the profile of this drawing. I really think I started to play with the gray background in this sketch. I also managed to keep the dark and light parts well separated.
