Peeling back the Layers - Day One and Day Two

Tina 03/04/2013

So I have been debating doing this post for a while and am going to try and share my work method with you.

I'd like to explain and show what happens when I reuse pages and what I consider a final piece. They are kind of neat to look over and see what made the cut and what I scraped.

Above was the most recent of these pages. The left image was a page on February 11th. The image on the right was from March 4th. I really like the page on the right. I used thinner and removed most of the face on the central figure, that created the dark ashy tone on the upper part of the page.

I love how the earlier figures bleed into the final figures. I love the leg of the main figure; the different layers of the page are all visible and make it so interesting to look at.

The page on the left is of Karli on February 4th.  The page on the right is of Tina from the 18th of February.

The main figure image on the left, I was actually rather happy with on the night of sketching. I managed to do a lot of work for a ten minute pose. It also had a Gauguin feel.  In the end I didn't like the color and there were problems with the way I drew some of the details. I really didn't like the face.

I took thinner to the main figure and it created the rich dark tone in the center of the drawing. The tone is doing a great job setting off the burnt sienna color in the central image.

I am really happy with these pages and how they look. I will have to do more like them.

IOOF - Around the Coffin

I am really happy with how this sketch came out.

So I managed to get to the Windward Community College library before they closed with a pair of black Tombow pens. I first did the drawing in just the brown then added the black for contrast. It creates a nice effect. There is a really nice contrast between the really cool black and the really warm brown.

The subject matter is of an Odd Fellows ceremony. The message of the ceremony was "death is always looming." The participants stood still long enough for me to get a nice sketch done.

HMoA Drawing Class - 03/06/2013 - Tina

Tina - 2013/03/04, Page 01/03

Monday was drawing class at the Art academy. The model was Tina.

Above is my favorite of the night. I reused an earlier page from another week and am so happy with the result. I am starting to really like these multiple pose pages. There is something to be said about the rhythm created by the multiple poses.

This was the 2-fives and the ten with the first of the 20 minute poses on the bottom left corner.

I also like the depth it creates on the page. Even though a pose may be covered or destroyed by thinner. I still think it lingers on the page in some ways. It may be as subtle as just a small color shift  to the ink wash in the background. I will be doing a post about this later in the week.

I had a pretty good night. Above is second 20 minute pose of the night. I love how I drew her arm in the foreground.

This was the last pose of the night. I do like how the gestures leak through in the pose.

This life drawing class is on Monday at 7PM. It is located at the The Honolulu Museum of Art School, formerly the Academy Art Center at Linekona. There is a $10 class fee.

Oddfellows meeting 03/05/13 - The Secretaries

So this Tuesday was another Odd Fellows meeting with my Dad. I had to be the AV guy, so I sat in a different location then normal.

I did a drawing of the two secretaries hard at work during the meeting. A really nice sketch.

During the meeting I did another drawing that is kind of amazing. Wait until you see it.

At Starbucks 03/03/13

Bright and early on Sunday morning I drove to a meeting for The Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF).  I stopped by the Starbucks in Kaimuki beforehand for my morning caffeine and creative fix.

It was early enough that they still had some chairs stacked. I thought is made an interesting drawing. I do like the details I was able to render. The rows of syrups between the two espresso machines and the row of cups on the display island are some of my favorite things about this drawing.
