Scott working at Muumuu Heaven

So on Thursday we were working at Muumuu Heaven. Scott was sitting on the bench outside of the store. We were making the tags for the dresses. We broke the process down so all the kids can help out. Scott was doing the hardest step, putting a safety pin through the end of the tag then stringing it on a rope.

He was sitting interestingly, sitting on one of his legs. He had the finished tags on the rope stung around his neck. I quickly sketched him, then added as many details as I could. I captured a lot of the scene and it's a pretty good sketch.

At Starbucks 02/25/13

On Monday, I was waiting for my figure drawing class to start at the Honolulu Museum of Art. If I have to wait for something, I love to go to Starbucks. Yes, for the coffee, but there is also a payload of inspiration there for me to sketch. For example, the above woman on her phone was a golden opportunity and I decided to do a quick sketch of her.

A man then came along and sat in the seat in front of her.  So I added him to the drawing.

I was a little unhappy with this until I darkened the window frames. With that, I made a really nice sketch. What do you think?

Aunty Rene

This is a portrait of Rosemarie's mother who we all call Aunty Rene.

She has been so much fun to have around. She is in town before she heads off to watch the Merry Monarch Festival.

I did this drawing while the students were bowling. It is not my best, but I like some things about it. I like the accessories she was wearing. The two necklaces and the hat with the feathered band.

She is 100 percent Portuguese, so some of her behaviors and sayings remind me of my Mom's family, who are also Portuguese. I am finding it a neat experience.

Today was her birthday and I gave her this drawing a present. She thanked my profusely.

HMoA Figure Drawing 02/27/13 - Sergio

Monday was art class at the Honolulu Art Museum and the model was Sergio. And as always, he was a blast to draw.

Above is my favorite of the night. I think I will clean up the image with some thinner, but I think this is such an awesome drawing. Sergio says he was trying to make it look like he was paddling a boat, but I think it looks more like a laborer pulling a heavy weight. I really like how I captured the tension in his arms.

I was sitting low on this pose. So there is a neat foreshortening on the legs. I did manage to do a lot in the 20-minute pose.

This was the 10-minute and the two 5-minutes. I used a page from the last time Sergio modeled; it was the 10-minute page and the two 5-minute poses. I do like how this page is progressing. I may scrape out a section and use it for a 20-minute pose in the future.

In life, you must keep your options open to creativity.

This was the second of the twenty minute poses. I was tempted to move as he took the pose. I tend not to like reclining poses. I decided to draw it because there were some really nice shadows on his back. This page is working pretty well with the gestures in the left corner.

This was the last pose of the night. Sergio was posing with his robe slung over his shoulder.

I rendered the figure a little differently then I normally do. I used the color black to do some of the outlines and it is creating some nice parts. I do like what I did with the shadows in this pose.

I especially like the arm resting on his hip. There is a nice flatness to the shape, though it still defines the form very well.

This life drawing class is on Monday at 7PM. It is located at the The Honolulu Museum of Art School, formerly the Academy Art Center at Linekona. There is a $10 class fee.

Student on the Bus

This is a drawing of one of the students on the bus. The "likes" abound.

This drawing came out really well. I like the likeness of the student and the little details I was able to capture.

I like how his clothes are baggy and how I captured how ill-fitting they are.

I like how much of the bus I was able to render. The seats, windows and fixtures all look great. I love how the seat belts came out.

I like how I captured the light steaming through the windows on the ride.

I am really happy with this drawing.

Computer Stations

This is another drawing of mundane areas. This time it is the computer station in the classroom.

These are really fun to do.
